Shelli S. Anderson, Associate
As a native Hoosier, I grew up in southern Indiana (Madison) and attended college at Indiana University in Bloomington. I graduated from IU in 1997 with a B.A. in telecommunications and Spanish. After getting married to my college sweetheart, and working a few years in Indianapolis in marketing and as a telecommunications specialist, I decided to attend law school.
Continuing to work full-time during the day, I attended the evening program at Indiana University School of Law -Indianapolis (now known as Robert H. McKinney School of Law), where I graduated in 2004. I enjoy giving back to the community and volunteering my time helping others. I became a lawyer to help people and I frequently field calls, emails and requests on social media from friends, neighbors and old classmates seeking my advice and counsel. I love being able to assist those in need of legal advice, and those injured or harmed by others.
Beginning in law school and early in my career, I devoted extra time to casework for the Protective Order Pro Bono Project in Marion County. As a law student, I also served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of The Dictum, was a member of the Democratic Law Society, the Dean’s Tutorial Society and the Women’s Caucus. With the flexibility to attend law school in the evenings, I gained invaluable hands on experience by working during the day as a law clerk in several area law firms, including three years at Wilson Kehoe Winingham in Indianapolis. I also was an intern during the summer of 2003, for the U.S. Dept. of Transportation, Maritime Administration, in Washington, D.C.
My first position as an attorney was with Tanner Law Group, exclusively representing homeowner and condominium associations. I became an Associate with Van Valer Law Firm in January 2008, where my practice focuses primarily on community association law, real estate, personal injury, commercial law, employment law, estate planning and probate.
I am a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Franklin. My husband, Mark, and I have three children, Gavin, Sam and Sydney. I was elected to the Board of Directors and served as Secretary for the local chapter of CAI (Community Associations Institute) in 2005. I am also a member of the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis, the American Bar Association, the Indiana State Bar Association, the Indianapolis Bar Association and the Johnson County Bar Association. I am a 2011 graduate of Leadership Johnson County where I volunteered helping the homeless and near homeless alongside Christian Help, Inc. Currently, I am volunteering my time serving on Leadership Johnson County’s Public Relations Committee and the Family Services Committee for Habitat for Humanity of Johnson County.
